Create a Gratitude Jar: A Simple Way to Teach Thankfulness

Gratitude is a cornerstone of happiness and a wonderful habit to nurture in children. One of the simplest and most impactful ways to instill gratitude in your family is by creating a gratitude jar. This fun and creative activity is perfect for kids and parents alike and can help foster a positive and mindful household. Here’s how to get started!

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Jar (This one off Amazon is perfect with a slit in the lid)
  • Slips of Paper (Join our challenge for this freebie)
  • Pens or Markers
  • Tape or Glue
  • Scissors

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Find a Jar: Grab an empty jar or container or the one listed above. Let the kids pick one or repurpose an old mason jar.
  2. Decorate: Cut out our label and tape it to the front of the jar
  3. Set a Routine: Decide how often to add to the jar—daily, weekly, or whenever the mood strikes.
  4. Reflect and Write: Encourage everyone to write or draw one thing they’re grateful for. Younger kids can share their thoughts, and parents can write for them.
  5. Fill the Jar: Fold the papers and drop them into the jar. Over time, watch it fill up with love and positivity.
  6. Open the Jar: On Christmas Day read your slips of paper and what you're grateful for!  Or if you're doing this jar at a different time of year, consider it during these holidays or occassions.

    • On New Year’s Eve to reflect on the year
    • During family gatherings or Thanksgiving
    • Whenever someone needs a pick-me-up
    • At the end of each month as a celebration of gratitude

Tips for Success

  • Make It Accessible: Keep the jar in a central spot where it’s easy to reach.
  • Be Specific: Encourage kids to think beyond “I’m grateful for my toys.” Ask questions like, “What made you smile today?” or “Who helped you feel happy this week?”
  • Model Gratitude: Share your own thoughts to inspire your kids.

    The Big Picture

Creating a gratitude jar is more than just a fun craft—it’s a way to teach kids the lifelong skill of appreciation. By focusing on the good things, big or small, you’ll help them develop resilience, optimism, and a positive outlook.
